Why Your Cowlick Decides Where Your Hair Should Part

Learn why your cowlick controls your part line and how working with it makes your haircut look better every day.

Have you ever tried to part your hair, but it keeps fighting back? You comb it flat, and five minutes later, a chunk pops right up.

That happens because of a cowlick. A cowlick is a small swirl of hair that grows in a circle, like water draining down a sink. Most people have at least one near the crown of their head or right along their front hairline.

Why You Cannot Fight It

Hair grows out of your scalp at an angle. In a cowlick, the roots point in different directions.

If you try to part your hair against that natural swirl, the roots bend too much. They push back against your brush. This makes your hair look puffy on one side and flat on the other. It can even make your hair stick straight up in the air.

When you part your hair in the same direction the swirl turns, the hair lays down flat. It feels soft and stays in place all day without a ton of hair spray or gel.

How to Find Your Natural Part

You can find your best part at home in just two minutes:

Wash your hair so it is completely wet. Take a comb and push all your hair straight back from your forehead. Stop moving and gently push your head forward, or shake it a little. Watch where the hair splits open on its own.

Wherever the hair naturally opens up is where your cowlick wants it to go. That is your true part line.

What Face Shapes It Helps

Working with your cowlick helps your overall look. A side part can soften a square jaw. It can also make a round face look a bit longer and leaner.

If your swirl sits right in the dead center of your head, a middle part will look very balanced on an oval face. The key is to match your cut to the swirl, not the other way around.

What to Tell Your Barber

When you sit in the chair, tell your barber or stylist where your cowlick is before they start cutting.

You can say: "My hair grows in a swirl right here. Can we cut it to match that direction?"

A good barber will leave the hair slightly longer on top of the cowlick. Extra length gives the hair more weight, which keeps it from sticking up like an antenna.

For daily upkeep, blow-dry that area first while it is still damp. Warm air helps the roots relax so you do not have to fight them later.
