Why the Crown of Your Head Decides Your Bangs Length

Learn why the swirl on top of your head controls how long or short your bangs will sit, and how to get it right before you cut.

What is your crown?

Touch the top back part of your head. You will feel a spot where your hair grows in a circle. Some people call it a swirl. Barbers and stylists call it the crown.

This spot is very strong. It pushes hair in different ways. Some hairs get pushed down your back. Other hairs get pushed straight toward your face. Because of this, the crown decides how your front bangs or fringe will look.

The invisible bridge of hair

Think of your hair like a bridge. The hair on your forehead does not grow by itself. A lot of your bangs actually starts way back near your crown.

If you have a crown that sits far forward, your hair wants to lean toward your face. It pushes your front hair down. That makes bangs look thick and long.

If your crown sits far back, or if it pulls your hair backward, your bangs have to work harder. They do not get as much push from behind. If you cut them too short, the hair springs up like a jump rope. It will float above your eyebrows instead of resting flat.

Who looks best with short or long bangs?

Before you cut, think about your face shape and your daily habits:

Round or square faces: Longer bangs that sweep to the side often look best. They show a bit of your forehead and make your face look a little longer. Oval or long faces: Full, straight bangs work great. They cover more forehead and balance your features. * Cowlick owners: If the swirl at your crown is very tight, keep your bangs a bit longer. Heavy hair stays down much better than light, short hair.

How to talk to your barber

Do not just say, "Cut my bangs to my eyebrows." A good haircut needs more care than that.

Tell your barber to look at your crown first. Say, "My crown pulls my hair a certain way. Can you cut my fringe dry?"

When hair is wet, it stretches out flat. Once it dries, it bounces up. If your crown pulls hair back, wet cuts can leave you with bangs that end up way too short.

Also, remember the upkeep. Bangs grow fast. You will need a quick trim every three to four weeks to keep them out of your eyes.
