Why Hot Water Fades Hair Color and How to Wash It Right

Washing dyed hair with hot water opens up the hair and washes color away, so use cool water to keep your shade bright.

What Hot Water Does to Dyed Hair

When you dye your hair, the color sits deep inside each strand. Hair has an outer layer that looks like tiny shingles on a roof. We call this layer the cuticle.

Hot water makes those tiny shingles open up wide. When they open, the color trapped inside slips right out and goes down the drain. If you love very hot showers, your fresh color can turn dull and muddy after just two or three washes.

Cold or lukewarm water does the opposite. It keeps those tiny shingles closed flat. When the shingles stay closed, the color stays locked inside where it belongs.

Which Hair Colors Need the Most Care?

Some colors wash out much faster than others when you turn the heat up.

Bright red, copper, silver, and pastel pink are the most fragile shades. The dye bits for these colors are small, so they escape easily. Dark brown and plain black dye hold on a bit better, but hot water still strips their shine and makes them look dry.

If you have a cut with lots of layers, like a shag or a textured bob, fading can look uneven. The ends of your hair are older and soak up heat faster, which makes the tips lose color before the roots do.

How to Keep Your Color Bright

You do not have to freeze your whole body in the shower. You just need to change how you wash your hair. Here are simple rules from real barbers and stylists:

Turn the tap to warm or cool when your head goes under the water. Wash your hair only two or three times a week instead of every day. Use a gentle shampoo made for colored hair, without harsh soaps. Put conditioner on the ends every time you get your hair wet. * Wear a shower cap on the days you want a steaming hot body shower.

Talking to Your Stylist

Before you get your hair colored, ask your stylist: "How fast will this shade fade with my hair type?"

Tell them honestly if you take hot showers or wash your hair every morning. If you hate cold water, a good colorist will suggest a low-maintenance look. They might give you a shadow root, highlights that blend with your natural hair, or a tone that fades into a nice golden blonde instead of a brassy orange.
