Why Hair Scissors Bend Hair Before Cutting It

Learn why scissors squeeze your hair before they cut, and how this changes the length of your haircut.

Have you ever left the salon feeling like your hair is way shorter than you asked for? You are not crazy. There is a real, scientific reason this happens. It comes down to how scissors work.

The Secret Squeeze

Hair scissors do not just slice straight through hair like a laser. When the blades close, they actually push and squeeze your hair first.

Think about squishing a soft marshmallow between your fingers before it breaks. Hair does the exact same thing. The blades bunch the hair strands together, press them flat, and then finally snap them.

Barbers call this compression. Because the hair bends and slides forward a tiny bit during the squeeze, the cut line moves. If a stylist pulls a section very tight and cuts it straight across, that hair springs back up the second they let go. Suddenly, it looks much shorter than it did a second ago.

Wet Hair Versus Dry Hair

This squeeze changes depending on whether your hair is wet or dry.

Wet hair stretches: Water makes hair stretchy like a rubber band. When wet hair gets squeezed by scissors, it is easy to accidentally cut off too much. Dry hair shows the truth: Cutting hair dry shows its real bounce, but the hairs can slide out of the way of dull scissors. * Curly hair shrinks the most: Curls stretch out long when pulled, but they spring right back to your ears once the weight is gone.

If you have a round or square face shape, a cut that jumps up too short can change your whole look. Extra bounce can make your face look wider than you planned.

How to Talk to Your Barber

You do not need to be scared of the scissors. You just need to know what to say in the chair.

First, tell your barber you want to see the length dry. Ask them to cut less than you think you want at first. You can always ask for more off, but you cannot glue it back on.

Next, tell them how you style your hair at home. If you just wake up and shake it out, tell them. They will cut with less tension so the hair does not shrink unexpectedly.

Upkeep and Scissors at Home

Never use kitchen scissors or craft scissors on your own hair. Paper scissors have blunt edges. Instead of slicing, they crush the hair shaft flat like a smashed straw. This gives you split ends right away, even on day one.

A good trim with sharp salon shears should last you six to eight weeks. If your ends start feeling rough or catching on your shirt, it is time for a tidy up.

Before you let anyone bring sharp blades near your head, it helps to see the final shape first.
