Why Your Bangs Look Shorter When Dry

Learn why wet hair shrinks as it dries, how to avoid bangs that are cut too short, and how to get the right fringe for your face.

Have you ever watched a barber cut your bangs to the perfect spot, only to go home and find they jumped way above your eyebrows? It happens all the time.

There is a simple reason for this: wet hair lies about its real length.

The Wet Hair Stretch

Water makes your hair heavy. It also loosens the tiny bonds inside each hair strand. This pulls your hair flat and straight. When your hair is wet, it stretches out like a rubber band.

As your hair dries, the water goes away. The hair snaps back to its normal shape. It bounces up. If your bangs were cut right at your eyebrows while wet, they will shrink upward as they dry. Suddenly, your bangs are half an inch shorter than you wanted.

This shrinkage happens to everyone, but some hair types bounce up much more than others:

Curly and wavy hair: These hair types bounce up the most. Curly bangs can shrink by two inches or more once dry. Cowlicks: If you have hair swirls near your forehead, drying makes them pop up and lift your bangs. * Straight, fine hair: This hair shrinks the least, but it still lifts a little bit as it dries.

How to Get the Right Bangs

To keep your bangs from ending up too short, you need to talk with your stylist before they pick up the scissors.

First, ask them to cut your bangs while your hair is completely dry. A dry cut lets the barber see the real length right away. There are no wet surprises later.

If the stylist prefers to cut wet hair, ask them to leave the bangs longer than you think you want. Tell them to stop at the tip of your nose or the middle of your eyelids. Once the hair is fully dry and styled, they can trim tiny bits off the bottom until the length is perfect.

Bangs and Your Face Shape

Bangs change the way your whole face looks. Long, soft bangs can make an oval or long face look a bit rounder. Wispy bangs that you can see through work great on smaller, heart-shaped faces because they do not hide your features. If you have a round face, curtain bangs that part in the middle help frame your cheeks nicely.

Keep in mind that bangs need work. You will need to trim them every three to four weeks. You also need to wash your forehead and style your bangs most mornings, because sleeping on them will make them stick straight up.
