Why Curly Hair Shrinks When It Dries and How to Cut It

Learn why curly hair looks much shorter when dry and how to avoid getting the wrong haircut length.

Have you ever washed your hair, looked in the mirror, and thought it was super long? Then, once it dries, it bounces all the way up to your ears.

This is called curl shrinkage. It is totally normal, but it can make getting a haircut scary.

Why Shrinkage Happens

Think of a straight piece of string. When you pull it, it stays the same length. Now think of a metal spring. When a spring gets wet and heavy, it stretches down. But when it dries, it snaps right back up into a tight spiral.

Curly hair works the exact same way. Water makes your hair heavy, so it hangs low. As the water leaves, your curls bounce back into their natural shape. Some curls only shrink a little bit. Very tight coils can shrink up to half their length or even more.

How Shrinkage Changes Your Haircut

Because of shrinkage, a wet cut can trick you. If a barber cuts your wet hair to your chin, it might bounce up to your nose once it dries. That is how people end up with haircuts that feel way too short.

Here are simple ways to make sure you get the right length:

Ask for a dry cut: Many barbers prefer to cut curls while they are dry. This lets them see the real length as they work. Show the dry length: Point to where you want your hair to sit after it dries, not while it is wet in the sink. * Wear your everyday style: Go to the shop with your hair styled how you normally wear it. Do not pull it back in a tight ponytail before your cut.

Who Needs to Watch Out for Shrinkage?

Anyone with waves, curls, or coils deals with shrinkage.

If you have a round face shape, tight curls that sit right at your cheeks can make your face look wider. Leaving a little extra length helps pull the shape down. If you have a long face shape, bouncy curls that sit near your jaw can add nice width.

Taking care of curly hair takes work. You need good conditioner so your curls do not get frizzy. You also need to trim split ends every two or three months so your curls keep their bounce.
